Why is our shareware site better?
We take great pride in monitoring the software that is submitted to this site. We do not allow just anyone at anytime to submit software here. Are you tired of the shareware sites that have 80 percent or more of their download links, just links to information web pages? We take pride in reviewing each submission by hand after scrutinizing with our proprietary Shareware PAD Spam Filter. Each title goes through extensive description testing to ensure that the software meets our high standards. Titles that are links to other web pages get automatically denied access to our site. Software is then reviewed by hand daily to ensure that each title that is listed continues to meet our standards. Companies who violate our standards are not allowed to place software on our site. We don't have billions of junk titles or link exchange titles on our site. At the time of submission every submission each download link is assured that it is a download link. We take pride in denying software. To this point we have rejected 11,109 titles from our database and will continue to as we need to ensure only the best at the Two Brothers Software Shareware Site. What does this mean for you? You will see several terms on our site, such as shareware, freeware, crippleware and many more. This can be very confusing to new users. Two Brothers Software wants you to be well aware of what you are getting when you select a title from our site. Here are some definitions that you may want to know about.
What is Shareware?
Software distributed on the basis of an honor system. Most shareware is delivered free of charge, but the author usually requests that you pay a small fee if you like the program and use it regularly. By sending the small fee, you become registered with the producer so that you can receive service assistance and updates. You can copy shareware and pass it along to friends and colleagues, but they too are expected to pay a fee if they use the product. Shareware is inexpensive because it is usually produced by a single programmer and is offered directly to customers. Thus, there are practically no packaging or advertising expenses.
Note that shareware differs from public-domain software in that shareware is copyrighted. This means that you cannot sell a shareware product as your own.
What is Freeware?
Freeware is computer software that is made available free of charge, but which is copyrighted by its developer, who retains the rights to control its distribution, modify it and sell it in the future. It is typically distributed without its source code, thus preventing modification by its users.
Source code is the version of software as it is originally written by a human in plain text (i.e., human readable alphanumeric characters) and before it is converted into its final, executable (i.e., runnable) form by a compiler. Source code can be written in any of numerous programming languages, some of the most popular of which are C, C++, Java, Perl, PHP and Tcl/Tk.
The term freeware was coined and trademarked in the 1980s by Andrew Fluegelman, an attorney, computer magazine editor and developer of a popular communications program named PC-Talk. However, that trademark was subsequently abandoned and the term thus became generic ( i.e., it can legally be used by anybody).
What is Crippleware?
Software used to demonstrate how a program works, but severely limited in functionality. For example, the printing or saving functions might be missing, or a large logo and title might be printed in the middle of each page. A database package might be limited to 100 records. The user is able to see how the full program operates, but cannot use the program for any meaningful work.
What is Trialware or Demoware?
Software that can be run for a limited period of time before it is purchased. Trialware has a built-in expiration date and will cease to operate beyond that date if it has not been paid for. Also called "demoware."
What is Nagware?
Nagware is software that is either fully functional or of limited function that has systems to nag you to purchase the full version to eliminate the nagging or anoyances. The annoyances can be as simple as one window that pops up each time you start the program to as much as each command having a window open. Nagware can be in a combination of the other types of software that is listed here. Sometimes software writers do not understand how bad the nagging systems thbey created are, when they are so bad that you cannot logicaly try thier software, maybe you should write them a note and ask them to give you a little slack!
What is Malware?
Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. It is a blend of the words "malicious" and "software". The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code.
Many normal computer users are however still unfamiliar with the term, and most never use it. Instead, "(computer) virus" is more commonly used in common parlance and often in the general media to describe all kinds of malware. Another term that has been recently coined for "malware" is "badware", perhaps due to the antimalware initiative Stopbadware or corruption of the term "malware".
Two Brothers Software screens each entry into the database. We reccomend for the best security that you scan each download you have with the latest and most up to date virus scanner.
